Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program

Creating Opportunities Through Access

Vision Statement

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program at Hodgin Elementary School strives to create an accessible environment for social, emotional, and academic success in order to support students in reaching their highest potential.

In order to attend the DHH Program, a child must be eligible for Special Education services and have a documented hearing loss.

Program Overview

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Program serves Kindergarten through 5th grade students who have a mild to profound hearing loss. We provide direct instruction through American Sign Language, spoken language, or a combination of the two.

Public School Setting

  • Options for academic instruction in the general education and/or DHH classroom.
  • Research-based core curriculum used for all instruction
  • All students have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Hearing students are exposed to American Sign Language and Deaf culture
  • Opportunities for the DHH students and their siblings to attend the same school.
  • Extra-curricular activities after school (ex: Homework Helpers, Art Club, Science Club)
  • Extended School Year (ESY) during the summer
  • Opportunities to transfer to the DHH Program in McKinley Middle School and Del Norte High School
  • Family support through educational workshops, regular meetings and resources
  • Special transportation for DHH students.
